01 / DEFINE THE BUILD
Choose what your Multiverse Reforged upgrades should improve
The stock Multiverse Reforged Commander deck already points toward a specific Jace plan: create inexpensive creature tokens, then exchange one of those bodies for a much more expensive creature or planeswalker from the library. A useful upgrade package should make that sequence more dependable. It should not merely replace unfamiliar cards with popular Commander staples.
Jace, Multiverse Architect is both the commander and part of the engine. His relevant loyalty ability exiles another creature or planeswalker you control, then reveals cards until it finds a creature or planeswalker to put onto the battlefield. His card-selection ability can also place an expensive card from your hand on the bottom of the library. That interaction explains the central deck-building constraint: every new creature or planeswalker becomes another possible reveal.
This Multiverse Reforged upgrades guide treats the deck as a ratio problem. Preserve token makers, add redundant transformation effects, and keep the reveal pool concentrated on immediate or durable payoffs. The recommendations use the published list and current card text; they are not our own gameplay results or a guaranteed power increase.
02 / PROTECT THE STOCK ENGINE
Know which stock cards already do the important jobs
Start with the complete 100-card decklist and mark roles rather than card types. Skrelv’s Hive and Dreadhorde Invasion can repeatedly create bodies without adding small creatures to the library. Secure the Wastes, Grand Crescendo and Lingering Souls can make several tokens from one card. Shark Typhoon turns noncreature spells into flying tokens, while Kher Keep supplies a token from a land slot.
The stock list also contains the effects that justify the setup. Mass Polymorph and Synthetic Destiny can exchange multiple creatures, while Proteus Staff offers another repeatable way to move through the library. Archon of Cruelty, Serra’s Emissary, Darksteel Angel and other expensive threats are the kind of outcomes the deck would rather put directly onto the battlefield than cast fairly.
That means the first version of your Multiverse Reforged upgrades should not cut token engines simply because their individual tokens look modest. A 1/1 body can be both a blocker and the resource Jace needs. Likewise, drawing an eight-mana creature is not always a success: the card may be more valuable in the library, where Jace or another transformation effect can find it. Brainstorm is unusually relevant because it can return drawn payoffs to the top of the library, and Jace can place one from your hand on the bottom.
These Multiverse Reforged upgrades preserve the stock 39-land count. Changing several lands, mana rocks and colored spells at once makes it difficult to tell whether a problem comes from the new cards or from access to white, blue, black and red mana.
03 / A COHERENT STARTER PACKAGE
Five Multiverse Reforged upgrades with matching cuts
Use this Multiverse Reforged upgrades table as a starting hypothesis, not a mandatory shopping list. Check current Oracle text, local prices and your table’s expectations before purchasing cards. Keep the original cards together so the precon can be restored.
| Add | Remove | Reason for the swap |
|---|---|---|
| Polymorph | Teferi’s Reproach | Adds another version of the central transformation effect without placing a small creature in the reveal pool. |
| Transmogrify | Fatehold Charm | Gives the deck red redundancy for turning a token into the next creature in the library. |
| Oath of Teferi | Plan for All Outcomes | Supports repeated planeswalker activations while remaining a noncreature enchantment. |
| Bitterblossom | Dack Fayden, Helping Hand | Creates a renewable flying token without adding another low-impact creature hit to the library. |
| Hoarding Broodlord | The Ur-Sphinx | Raises the payoff ceiling with an expensive flying creature whose entry ability can provide another card. |
Polymorph and Transmogrify are valuable because they keep the plan available after Jace has been removed or cannot spend loyalty. They also clarify what the deck is trying to do: create a token with a noncreature card, then exchange it for a deliberately selected threat. Do not cast either spell into an unknown reveal pool without reviewing the creature list after all other swaps.
Oath of Teferi and Bitterblossom attack two different bottlenecks. One increases what a planeswalker can do during your turn; the other produces a continuing supply of tokens. Both are noncreature permanents, so neither becomes a disappointing creature reveal. Bitterblossom’s life cost and Oath of Teferi’s five-mana cost still matter. “Synergy” does not erase those costs, so compare them with the pace and interaction at your table.
Hoarding Broodlord illustrates the standard for adding a new hit: it is expensive enough that bypassing its mana cost is meaningful, it has evasion, and its entry ability provides value even if opponents answer the body. The cut, The Ur-Sphinx, is not described as a weak card. Its Sphinx-focused identity simply points toward a different deck, while this package is trying to narrow Jace’s outcomes.
04 / BUILD IN PACKAGES
Alternative Multiverse Reforged upgrades by role
Compare Multiverse Reforged upgrades by role when a recommended card is unavailable. For repeatable token production, compare enchantments and lands that create bodies without entering the creature reveal pool. For transformation redundancy, read each spell’s targeting and ownership restrictions. For payoffs, prefer high-impact creatures you would be pleased to reveal at almost any stage.
A token-pressure package can lean further into cards that reward creating or sacrificing tokens. TCGplayer’s published upgrade list, for example, discusses Mirkwood Bats and Impact Tremors alongside additional token makers. That approach shifts some emphasis from transforming bodies into attacking or draining with them. If you take that route, label it as a deliberate secondary plan and avoid cutting so many transformation effects that Jace loses his distinctive purpose.
A planeswalker package is another possible direction, but it changes the reveal math because Jace can find planeswalkers as well as creatures. Oath of Teferi supports that build, yet every additional planeswalker should pass the same reveal test as a creature. A low-impact utility planeswalker can interrupt a sequence that was intended to find a large creature. Count both categories together when reviewing the possible outcomes.
A Nissa, Leyline Tamer build is a separate project. Nissa rewards lands entering and can reveal creatures, so fetch lands and ways to make land drops on other turns may become more important. Do not present a landfall-focused Nissa list as a drop-in set of Multiverse Reforged upgrades for Jace. The commanders overlap in putting creatures onto the battlefield, but they ask for different setup cards and different ratios.
Cards such as Commander's Sphere, Gilded Lotus and Thought Vessel appear in another published upgrade package as alternative mana artifacts. Treat those suggestions as choices, not automatic improvements over every Signet. In a four-color deck, two-mana fixing can help cast Jace earlier. Replacing it with more expensive ramp changes the curve. Compare the colors produced, the turn on which the artifact is useful and the colored pips in the spells you actually keep.
05 / VERIFY THE FINISHED LIST
Test the ratios before buying the next package
Document Multiverse Reforged upgrades, then recount exactly 100 cards including the commander. List every creature and planeswalker Jace can reveal. Ask how many outcomes are premium, situational or regrettable. That audit is more informative than average mana value alone.
Next, goldfish only the administrative parts if you choose to test on your own: opening access to all four colors, the number of turns before Jace can be cast, and whether token makers appear before transformation effects. This site has not performed that testing and does not claim a sample size. Record your own hands and change one package at a time so the result can be traced to a specific decision.
- Save the stock list. Download the original text file before editing and keep a separate adds-and-cuts record.
- Audit every reveal. Include creatures and planeswalkers; do not evaluate only the new additions.
- Recheck color sources. Jace needs white, blue, black and red. Total mana without the right colors is not enough.
- Keep token supply visible. Count repeatable engines separately from one-shot token spells and lands.
- Confirm current text and price. Use the official gallery or Gatherer for wording, and compare the exact printing before buying.
The best first upgrade is often the smallest package that makes the deck’s intention clearer. Five linked swaps are easier to understand and reverse than twenty unrelated additions. Once you know whether you enjoy the Jace transformation plan, you can decide whether to invest in stronger token engines, premium lands, another payoff package or an entirely different commander.
06 / QUICK ANSWERS
Multiverse Reforged upgrades FAQ
What is the first upgrade to make?
Start Multiverse Reforged upgrades with one redundant transformation spell such as Polymorph or Transmogrify, then remove a card that does not support the token-to-threat plan. Recount the reveal pool before the next change.
Should I remove the Signets?
Not automatically. The deck needs four colors, and two-mana artifacts can provide early fixing. Compare a proposed replacement’s cost, colors and place in your curve rather than treating every more expensive mana rock as an upgrade.
Why avoid cheap utility creatures?
Jace’s transformation ability may reveal them instead of an expensive payoff. A utility effect can still be worth that risk, but it must be evaluated as a possible Jace result, not only as a card you plan to cast normally.
Are these swaps based on playtesting?
No. They are editorial recommendations derived from the published stock list, current card text and comparison with established upgrade guides. This site does not claim a tested win rate, power bracket or firsthand game results.
Do I need to buy every suggested card?
No. Compare Multiverse Reforged upgrades by role, set a budget and use cards you already own when they satisfy the same requirement. Verify current wording and the exact printing before purchasing anything.
